History

The International Lawn Tennis Club of the Czech Republic
(hereinafter “the IC”)

IC of the Czech Republic was founded in 1933, as the fifth IC in the world. Historically oldest IC established already in 1924 has Great Britain.

The IC’s ideals are believed to be of such values that the development and maintenance of their standards in any country should be the concern of all those interested in the fine tradition of the tennis game. The ways to achieve such purpose were the object of a first exchange of views in Paris in 1946 between members of some ICs. Then on July 22nd, 1947, at a meeting of representatives of all existing ICs, i.e., Great Britain, France, U.S.A, The Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Sweden and Belgium, was unanimously recommended that the maintenance of IC ideals everywhere should be entrusted to a “Council of the ICs” composed of representatives of all the existing ICs.

Prior to formation of any new International Club the approval of this Council must be obtained. The function of the Council will be carried on by an executive committee composed of representatives of the three oldest ICs, Great Britain, France and the U.S.A., and of three other ICs, in accordance with the seniority of their formation and in rotation, shall be elected for a period of one year.

After the Second World War the IC in our country was abolished. From 1994 there were efforts made by the Council to re-establish this prestige club in the Czech Republic. First attempts to re-instate the IC in our country were made in 1995 when a friendly match between the members of the IC of Great Britain and the members of the I.CLTK Prague was organized.

But only from December 1998, when Helena Sukova got involved, the more intensive work started towards this re-instatement in Prague. At the end we were successful in creating the Rules of our IC, which are agreed on and comply with the Council’s orders in Great Britain as well as with the current regulations for forming new tennis clubs in the Czech Republic. The IC of the Czech Republic was welcomed back onto the Council of the ICs as a re-established Member during the 51st Annual General Meeting of the Council of International Lawn Tennis Clubs held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Wimbledon, on Tuesday 29 June 1999. There are now as many as 42 countries registered with their IC affiliated into the Council of the ICs. Our President Helena Sukova was a Co-opted member of the Executive Committee of the Council of the ICs from January 2001 till June 2008.
