se základy tenisu ho seznámil hrabě Teubert, který ho v r. 1925
přihlásil na turnaj, jehož vítěz měl jet trénovat princeznu Gabrielu von
Ratiboř na zámek Grafenegg do Rakouska. Tento turnaj vyhrál, a tak ve
čtrnácti letech odjel do ciziny. Do r. 1939 se živil tenisem -
trénováním šlechty a příležitostným trénováním v lázních; od r. 1929
hrál pravidelně na mistrovství světa profesionálů, která se konala
nejdříve na francouzské Riviéře a později v Berlíně; v r. 1938 spolu
s Karlem Koželuhem reprezentoval ČSR v mezinárodním utkání s Maďarskem;
v r. 1939 se opětovně stal amatérem a po deset let byl na předních místech
tenisového žebříčku ČSR. Protože býval profesionálem, nemohl hrát
významné mezinárodní tenisové turnaje, ani Davis Cup. Hrával přátelská
utkání a v r.1947, po vítězství nad jugoslávským daviscupovým hráčem Mitičem, si upevnil svoji pozici hráče č. 2 (za Drobným). Spolu se svojí
manželkou Bohumilou Bartlovou (vítězkou „Pardubic“ 1939) se v r. 1939
stali finalisty ve smíšené čtyřhře na mezinárodním mistrovství ČSR; v r.
1948 se stal trenérem jugoslávského daviscupového týmu; v r. 1950 začal
studovat teologii a stal se hrajícím trenérem tenisového družstva Slavie
Vysoké školy, které vybojovalo druhé místo v republice; v 70. letech
hrál veteránské turnaje, na kterých nenašel přemožitele a vyhrál
několikrát mistrovství republiky ve své kategorii; v r. 1981 se probojoval
na Rhode Island v USA do finále své kategorie Mezinárodního mistrovství
USA na travnatých dvorcích; jeho dva synové a jedna z dcer patřili
koncem 50. a začátkem 60. let k předním juniorům ČSR, syn Josef byl dokonce v r.
1961 první v republice.

the Princess Gabriela von Ratibor from the chateau Grafenegg in Austria.
After winning this tournament at fourteen years of age he went abroad.
Till 1939 made his living by training aristocracy and occasionally
training at a health resort; from 1929 competed regularly at the World
Professional Championships, which took place at first on the French
Riviera and later on in Berlin; in 1938 together with Karel Koželuh
represented Czech Republic in a match against Hungary; in 1939 got back
his amateur status and for a decade was ranked in the top of the Czech
tennis rankings; couldn't play important international tennis
tournaments nor Davis Cup, because he used to be a professional; he
competed in friendly matches and in 1947 after a victory over
Yugoslavian Davis Cup player Mitic he established his position as a
number 2 player (behind Drobny); together with his wife Bohumila
Bartlova (winner of "Pardubice"1939) became finalist in mixed doubles at
the Czech International Championship (1939); in 1948 became Davis Cup
team coach of Yugoslavia; in 1950 began studies of theology and became a
playing coach of the Slavia University Tennis Team, which was second in
the republic; in the 70ties played veteran tournaments, where he did not
find conqueror and won several times the republic championships in his
category; finalist in his category at the International Championship of
the U.S.A. on grass courts at Rhode Island (1981); his two sons and one
daughter were placed in the top of Czech junior ranking, toward the end of 50´and
early 60´, son Joseph was first in the republic in 1961.

1906 in Athens won bronze medal in doubles; at the Olympic Games 1912 in
Stockholm became 4th in singles and at the same time was awarded the
Swedish King’s Trophy, as a special price for his “impeccable
style”; at the Olympic Games 1920 in Antwerp he gained the bronze medal
in mixed doubles together with Milada Srbkova
